A JOURNALIST HAS BEEN IN TOUCH WITH ME AND WONDERED IF YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES OF RACISM WITHIN COUNSELLING OR PSYCHOTHERAPY TRAINING.

I am asking because in May 2020 I posted a video of a Black man being tasered  at a petrol station forecourt in Stretford, Manchester, in the video he is seen standing next to a marked police car and puts down his crying son. Moments later he falls to the ground as a Taser is fired by one of the officers.The boy then becomes hysterical and screams “daddy”.
As a concerned citizen and psychotherapist I was concerned and shared this on BACP members page. The post attracted a lot of negative comments as well as racist comments. The post was removed and then the members page was shut down. Just a few weeks later we witnessed the killing of George Floyd…..
These comments made by members on a private FB page were shocking and highlighted the level of racism and ignorance in the profession and the lack of training for counselors and therapists on issues of racism.

Some people did share their experiences in confidence with me. The issue has not gone away.
