In response to the racial disparities report how much has really changed since the MacPherson report?
Issues of systemic oppression do not go away by just saying the evidence doesn’t support this. How long before the next Tory report states that we have now tackled sexism and women and girls are now safe. What about disproportionate Black maternal deaths, what about the disproportionate number of Black young men in the prison system, what about the disproportionate numbers of Black young people permanently excluded from school,what about the disproportionate numbers of Black people ‘detained’ under the Mental Health Act, What about the disproportionate numbers of Black young people who receive a late diagnosis of autism and miss out on crucial support in school, What about…….
I have been very active in trying to raise these issues particularly in the areas of education and health and well being. A new initiative – Black Minds Matter is a response to the lack of appropriate and accessible talking therapies for Black people who have not been served well by mental health services.
Last year days before George Floyd was killed there was an incident in Manchester of police brutality that shocked many us.
