Very interesting article that I came across today in Pink News. The article raises some very interesting points about medical care, trans health care and young people. What was most interesting to me was the discussion on ‘Gillick Competence’.

What is meant by Gillick competence?
Here’s what you need to know about capacity and consent in young people. 25 February 2025. ‘Gillick competence’ refers to a young person under 16 with capacity to make any relevant decision. Young people who are 16 years old and over can be presumed to have capacity to consent to treatment.illick competence
On the one hand we acknowledge competence and on the other we have professionals saying that young people cannot make decisions about the health care they recieve. This is contradictoray information.
I wanted to bring into this discussion and debate the issues for intersex children who at birth are having decisions made for them about gender without any possibility of any input at all. We have rules and laws about genital mutilation yet this doesn’t seem to be applied to the care of babies who cannot give consent to medical procedures that will legally define their gender forever!
When an intersex baby is born, who can figure out the gender with 100% accuracy?
A. A Team of Gender Specialist and Experts.
B. The frightened and confused parents.
C. The Intersex Baby who can’t talk yet.
D. A surgeon who “fixes” things permanently.
The answer is obviously ALWAYS, and ONLY C. Our self-determinatino of our gender is a Human Right! @followers
